Welcome to Residential Fire Safety. This class is in five short lessons, and it follows the shape of a fire itself: what happens before one, what you do during one, and what comes after. Before any of that is useful, though, you need one fact, because every recommendation in this class is downstream of it. A modern home fire moves faster than almost anyone expects. Fifty years ago, a family might have had something like fifteen minutes to get out of a burning house. Today the figure is closer to two or three. Nothing about fire changed. Our homes did. The furniture is foam and plastic instead of cotton and wood, the floor plans are open instead of divided into small rooms, and lightweight construction gives way sooner. So when we say get out immediately, that is not caution. It is arithmetic.

Three things by the end of this lesson. First, you should be able to describe how fast a home fire grows, in real numbers rather than an impression. Second, you should be able to explain why smoke, not flame, is what actually harms most people, because that single correction changes how you move through a burning house. Third, you should be able to name the three things every fire needs, so that when you look around your own kitchen or living room you can see the risk rather than just the furniture. These are not abstract. By the last lesson you will use all three to build a plan for the home you actually live in.

Here is the single most important idea in this class, and it is worth sitting with for a moment. When your smoke alarm sounds, you may have as little as one to two minutes to get everyone out of the building. Not one to two minutes to decide what to do. One to two minutes total. In that window a fire roughly doubles in size every thirty seconds or so in the early stages, and a room can go from a small flame to completely untenable in the time it takes to find your phone. This is why there is no step in this class that involves investigating the smell, or getting dressed, or looking for the cat. Everything we practice is designed to be done without thinking, because thinking is the part you will not have time for. Two minutes is also why we practice. A plan you have never walked through takes longer than a plan you have.

Ask most people what kills someone in a house fire and they will say the flames. The answer is smoke. Smoke carries carbon monoxide and a mix of other toxic gases produced when synthetic materials burn, and those gases can disable a person in a couple of breaths and kill them well before fire reaches the room they are in. Smoke does something else too, something people rarely anticipate. It is not the grey haze from a campfire. It is thick, black, and completely opaque, and it fills a room from the ceiling down. A hallway you have walked ten thousand times becomes a place where you cannot see your own hand. That is why the plan is to get low, where the air is cooler and clearer, and to know your route by feel rather than by sight. It is also why a closed bedroom door matters so much, and we will come back to that.

Fire needs three things at the same moment: fuel, heat, and oxygen. Remove any one of the three and combustion stops. That sounds like a classroom abstraction until you notice that it is the reason behind nearly every instruction in this class. Keeping a towel three feet from a burner separates fuel from heat. Sliding a lid onto a burning pan takes away the oxygen. Closing the door behind you as you leave limits the oxygen reaching the fire and slows how fast it grows. Unplugging a space heater before bed removes the heat source entirely. When you understand the triangle, you stop memorising a list of rules and start being able to work out the right answer for a situation nobody warned you about.

Take two minutes before the next lesson and think about your own home rather than homes in general. Where is a fire most likely to start? For most households the honest answer is the kitchen, and the second most likely is wherever the heating equipment is. Then ask a harder question. What would be the first sign you noticed, and would you notice it if you were asleep? A great many people discover, working through this, that the room where a fire is most likely to begin is the room furthest from the only working smoke alarm in the house. Holding your own floor plan in mind will make the next four lessons concrete instead of general.
